Harper India to Publish Capitalist History of TATA Corporation

HarperCollins India will publish renowned historian Dr Mircea Raianu’s latest treatise on global capitalism in South Asia. The book, titled ‘TATA: The Global Corporation That Built Indian Capitalism’, will launch in India on May 20. Prof Raianu’s book, originally being published by Harvard University Press, will track down the history of India’s 150 years old corporation that brought about the capitalist revolution in the country.

TATA is probably India’s oldest business corporation, and its founders are often regarded as the pioneers of the industrial revolution in India. Founded by Jamshedji Tata during the peak of the British Raj in India, the family-run business has grown to be one of the biggest corporations in the world. Prof Raianu’s book documents the stupendous rise of the multinational corporation that plays in every field, right from producing salt to providing software services globally.

Headquartered in Mumbai, TATA came into existence in 1863. In the modern-day, the TATA Group is the most prestigious Indian business conglomerate. However, the corporation is not free from controversies, which raises several questions pertaining to the general perception of the company. Though the TATAs are known to be the foremost philanthropists of India, they’ve had their fair share of controversies that are reminiscent of the ones usually associated with other capitalists corporations across the globe. Prof Raianu’s treatise on the TATAs, who’s also a research scholar on capitalism in South Asia, is expected to take us through these controversies, and give a deep insight into the rise of what is the crown jewel of Indian capitalism.

Dr Mircea Raianu is a former research scholar at Harvard University and also an alumnus of the University of California, Berkeley. He is currently a professor of history at the University of Maryland. Prof Raianu is widely being recognized as an authoritative voice on Capitalism in South Asia and the British Empire.
